Not All Are Very Merry...

CHRISTMASES

There have been Christmases

when we hung the garland

and shopped and partied

and tried to force festive smiles

while our broken hearts

wanted to hide in solitude

because a parent died

or there was illness

or the marriage

was falling apart

 

There have been Christmases

we wanted to cut

out of the calendar

even though

Jesus was worthy

of our fullness

 

He understood

even if we didn’t, then

 

Ah, but this

is a Christmas of joy…

We shop with enthusiasm

We sing carols as we trim

and our hearts dance

as we praise Him mirthfully

 

We’re healed

and Christmas is a wonder
